Now that Eliza has reached the ripe old age of 3 and her attachment to the binky did not seem to be waning, we decided it was time to go cold turkey. I had planned on taking her to the store and letting her pick out something fun that she could trade me for the binky, but we still anticipated that it was going to be a struggle. Probably something along the lines of WWIII + a string of sleepless nights. I mourned that it would probably be the end of naptime. But my brilliant aunt Glynis told me about the "binky fairy" -- an idea from the Super Nanny herself. The gist is this: the kid gathers up all their binkies and puts them in a jar, and then the Binky Fairy comes to get them and give them to the babies who need binkies, leaving a surprise in their place. I didn't know if Eliza would really understand this storyline, but she was all over it. I really shouldn't have been surprised -- two of her favorite things right now are fairies and babies. So she was immediately on board with anything to help babies and completely enchanted by the idea of the Binky Fairy.
Much to our surprise, she felt asleep quickly (after a few more reassurances that the Binky Fairy was indeed going to give her binkies to the poor little babies that didn't have any binkies) and slept almost entirely through the night. She did wake up about a half-hour before the usual time, crying for her binky. We went in and reminded her about the binky fairy scenario and she reluctantly fell back asleep. A little later we could hear her crying it her room and it sure sounded like she was saying "Why? Whyyyyyyy?!"
But when she was finally ready to wake up and she saw that the Binky Fairy had replaced her binkies with a jar full of candy (pink Whoppers, to be exact) and a Princess Tiana doll, she was ecstatic. And she has done terrific ever since. So yay for the Binky Fairy!
That leads, however, to what I think is the funniest part of the whole story. Early Saturday morning, before she had come down to find her treats, Sammy and I were in the kitchen. The following is our conversation:
Sam (hesistantly): "Mom, I don't think there's a Binky Fairy."
Me: "You're right."
Sam: "It's just you, huh?"
Me: "Yup, I just went to Walmart last night after you guys went to bed."
--pause--
Sam: "Is it the same with the tooth fairy?"
Me: "What do you think?" Sam: "I think it's just you... is that right?"
Me: "Do you want to know?"
--pause--
Sam: "Not until I'm done losing teeth."
A few months ago Eliza and Josh were supposed to be taking a nap at Nana's house, when Nana discovered the strangest phenomenon -- Eliza standing on her head in the crib, with her feet hooked over the railing! Over the weeks that followed, we found her doing it quite frequently, but never (of course) when we snuck into her room with the camera. I was starting to feel like some kind of a wildlife photographer, hunting the last of some endangered species. But at last, at the beginning of this month, success! (What a surprise that she finally cooperated for Daddy...)
Why does she do it? Is she trying to escape? Does she just like the feeling of the blood rushing to her head? It's a mystery! She's awfully adorable, though!
Well, yesterday was a very big day in our family -- it was Sammy's first day of kindergarten AND Eliza's first birthday!
Sammy has been excited for months and months to start kindergarten, and when the big day arrived he could hardly contain his excitement! We met up with all his little friends who are in his class (there are 5 of them who all got put together - yay!) and the other moms to walk up to the school together, but the boys were in no mood to wait for us stroller pushers and ran the whole way to the school, and they couldn't wait for us to say goodbye and let them get started! I am so excited for him -- it's the start of a whole new stage of life, you know? He now has a whole portion of his life in which I have little involvement and he's responsible for himself. It may just be 2 3/4 hour per day, but it's a big deal! He loved his first day, though he did admit he quit paying attention because he already knew what they were talking about. But he assured us that he sat still and watched the teacher the whole time. Sigh. His teacher, Mrs. Palmer, seems really nice and has some good ideas for how to get him engaged, so hopefully that will go well. I know it's only kindergarten, but I just feel like it will set the stage for how he feels about school for the future. If he goes through yet another year of not learning anything new, is he going to lose his love for learning? I'm trying not to stress about it, and just give it a chance and see how he does. Today he told me that he tried really hard to pay attention. And he loved the "gingerbread man" activity today, where they chased the gingerbread man all over the school -- a pretty clever way to teach the kindergartners all about the school and the staff, I think!

Yesterday was also Miss Eliza's first birthday! We had the family over for dinner in the evening, and I was running late getting the food and decorations ready, so Eliza was really hungry and cranky by the time we were ready to eat. A little watermelon and quesadilla made a big difference, however, and by the time cake time rolled around she was really getting into it!
She demolished that cupcake in the end and got as chocolatey and pink frosting-y as any one-year-old could wish. The highlight of Eliza's night, however, was definitely the presents! She loved the book with furry puppies and kitties from Taya and Noah, and she had a few kisses for the baby doll from Mommy and Daddy. But none of those could hold a candle to the purple puppy from Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa Tarbet. If you press its paws it plays music and talks, and she was instantly in love. This video says it all!
If you'd like to see more pictures of these fun events and more, check out this Facebook album.
I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with the party! Amy came over a few days ago and helped me make gum paste flowers for these fab cupcakes, and then Ange really saved my bacon by coming a few hours early and helping with the cupcakes, the decorations, the cleanup, everything! I was so bummed I didn't get a pic of her with the cupcakes, too, because she was a major contributor to them! Mom brought the ice cream, Em brought Taya and Noah, Dad helped entertain Eliza so I could finish up, and Grandma Tarbet helped me get dinner ready even though her back was killing her. Dan made a side-pilgrimage for tortillas after I completely forgot to make them even though that was pretty much the whole point of the food and then kept everything running smoothly duringthe party. I just have the best family in the whole world, and I really love and appreciate you guys!
Life is fun, you know? These three kids keep us so entertained as their little personalities and talents develop. We've been having fun times over the past few weeks. We've taken a couple of trips to the childrens' museum, which is SO fun. The boys love all the different outlets for creativity there. They've done some really cool classes, like exercise, learning about eyes, and "action painting." (Thanks again for the membership, Grandma and Grandpa! Best present ever!) Eliza loves to watch all the big running around and occasionally gets to get out and play, too. Last time we went with Aunt Carrie and Taya and Noah, which was a blast.
I snapped this one a few Sundays ago -- my daddy is such a great Bapa! The kids love piling on for story time.
The weather around here has not been very spring-like -- the other day we woke up to 2" of snow, and even when it's been sunny it's been chilly and windy. We made the most of it the other day, though, and got out the kites Grandma Hill sent for the boys. They were SO excited. It took some doing, but we got both kites up! We couldn't get Joshy's to stay up for very long, but he had a great time watch it swoop around and crash and go up again close to the ground. We were trying to do it in the front yard, and I think the air currents were too swirly in the cul-de-sac.
Oh, I have to share a funny, sweet story. Last Monday, when we were getting ready for "You're My Favorite" Day, Sammy wanted to make cards for my mom and dad. This is the card he made for my mom:
I thought it was very sweet. On our way to my parents' house that morning, Sam was holding the card in his lap and Josh said, "Jesus's hair looks funny!" Sam fixed him with a stern eye and said, "Josh, how do you think Jesus would feel if He heard you say that about him?" Glad to know the lessons are getting in there somewhere...
Josh is feeling very conflicted about whether he wants to be a baby or a big boy. He sees Eliza and Sam and kind of wants the best of both worlds. He is hilarious, too – always looking for ways to make people laugh. He’s gotten very friendly, too. He’ll walk right up to people and start a conversation, almost always starting with “Do you know my name?!” I’m trying to teach him that it’s only okay to talk to strangers if Mommy is with you. He’s pretty independent and likes to do things his own way.
Eliza is getting SO big! She’s almost 8 months old. Her big thing right now is pulling herself up to standing, which she’ll do using anything she can get her hands on. She hasn’t figured out how to move her feet yet, though, so we’re in no immediate danger of walking. She’s also trying very, very hard to crawl. She gets up on her hands and knees and rocks and rocks and then pushes up on to her toes and fingertips, but (just like with walking) she can’t figure out how to move her feet, so she mostly pushes herself backwards if she goes anywhere at all. It’s very frustrating for her to be trying to get a toy but only getting further and further away! Between rolling and just generally squirming around, she can cover a lot of ground, and I think she’s pretty proud of herself. Here's a cute video of her trying to make her move:
Eliza has her boys wrapped around her little finger -- this is just a small sample of the lengths to which they'll go to entertain her. It may not always be successful on her, but I sure found it entertaining...
Hey, family and friends -- sorry I've been remiss in updating our blog! We haven't had any major events lately, just lots of everyday fun stuff. Here's a very cute pic of the kids we took to send out as Valentines for the grandparents. Sammy helped me make the sign, and he was very proud of it. I was very proud of the fact that I took it myself -- the kids are sitting on the bed in our guest room!
Here are some other fun recent pics:
"My, what big eyes you have!"
Sammy and Dan building the cool ferris wheel and swing rides Grandma sent for Christmas:
The rest of these are from the last couple of days when Leanne and Amelia were here -- we got to spend some fun time hanging out at our house, and then the last day we went shopping with Nana and the boys had SO much fun on the merry-go-round with Nana.
Another very exciting happening in the family was the arrival of baby Cody! We went over to Chad and Esther's house to meet him, and he is just the cutest little guy. Here are a few pictures from our visit:
Oh, how can it be? My baby girl is old enough for solid foods! Well, as solid as rice cereal in a whole lot of formula gets... Eliza was very happy about sitting in the high chair. I think she liked being up with all the big people. Here she is, pre-food. Doesn't this look say, "Sure! I'm game for anything - bring on the pasty goo!"?
Once Daddy put said pasty goo in her mouth, however, she was not at all interested. In fact, the only word to describe her reaction is disgust, together with disbelief that we would subject her to such a thing. We got a couple of bites in before we gave up, but she promptly spit all that up. Oh, the fun.
Video coming as soon as it's done processing on YouTube!
Make sure you notice how cute her highchair is. Our highchair had lasted well through 4 kids (the Neves' twins and our boys), but the cushion was in really bad shaped when I hauled it in from the garage. So I decided to be brave and make a slipcover for it! I had a bunch of really cute fabric on hand that I ordered to make goodies to sell on etsy, and I was really happy that it turned out so well. It was kind of complicated! :)
And here's a little blast from the past...
My siblings gave me an awesome digital photo frame for my birthday, and I've had a ton of fun going through all our old pics and loading them on the frame. I found this old video of Sammy singing "You Are My Sunshine," just a few days shy of his 2nd birthday. What a little cutie pie!
We have had the most wonderful and exhausting couple of days! I love, love, love Christmas, and all our family traditions are what make it so special. On Christmas Eve we went out for Chinese food, of course. Sammy was very brave and tried some shrimp, but Joshy mostly ate those little fried sugar roll things (thanks, Aunt Amy!). His favorite part was spearing them with chopsticks. Afterward we went back to my parents' house for a new tradition -- everyone brought Christmas cookies and a Christmas story to share, and we sang Christmas songs to go with each one. (Apparently our old tradition of acting out the nativity scene had become a little too farcical for my mom's taste. There was admittedly a lot of snickering involved...) Sammy and I had made dee-licious gingerbread boys, and Sammy read "Beyond Bethlehem" (a book about what was happening at the time of Christ's birth in the Book of Mormon) to the family. He did a great job!
That night Dan and I continued our own tradtion, enjoying each others' company while watching "A Christmas Story" and "helping" Santa get ready for Christmas morning.
Sammy was bursting at the seams to get downstairs and see what Santa brought, but we literally had to drag Joshy out of bed. For some reason that kid just does not like opening presents, or really have any attention focused on him. But we got him downstairs, and Sammy was overjoyed to see that Santa had gotten him the coolest bike EXACTLY like the one he'd seen in Walmart! We told Joshy Santa had left us a note saying his present was downstairs, but he refused to go down and look at it. Dan picked him up and carried him, but all reluctance vanished when he saw his present: his very own trampoline!
It's very gratifying when your cranky, non-present-excited child is bouncing up and down saying "This -- trampoline -- is -- the -- best -- present -- EVER!" And follows that up with a "You -- are -- so -- jealous!" to his big brother. Well, that part was more funny than gratifying, and in Josh's defense, he's very generous in sharing his cool toy with Sam. After we were finished opening the mountain of presents from very generous grandparents, aunts, and uncles, we got dressed and headed over to my parents' house again for more Christmas fun.
I admit I got a little carried away with Eliza's Christmas outfit. I couldn't find anything that really appealed to me at the store, so I decided to make her a tu-tu that would match her cute polka dot sweater my mom brought from England. The leg warmers from Aunt Sarah were PERFECT with it, and I couldn't resist adding curly ribbon to her pigtails as the finishing touch. What a cute little sugar plum fairy!
We had a wonderful day with our family. We had invited a few of our new Bhutanese friends to our Christmas dinner, but because of the weather -- total whiteout blizzard conditions -- we had to call and cancel. An hour or two later, however, the weather cleared enough for Amy and Dan P. to brave the roads and they were able to come after all! I think that was really a miracle. Mom and my sisters and I spent most of the day in the kitchen getting all ready for dinner, and we had such a fun time together. Because the Dulals (the families that joined our Christmas dinner) are Hindu and therefore vegetarian, we had to get a little creative with our dinner planning. I made minestrone, which turned out delicious, Emily made yummy stuffed peppers, and we had lots of fruits and veggies. It was probably the healthiest Christmas dinner we ever had, which was a good thing because we had all spent most of the day eating fistfuls of chocolate...
After dinner my dad dressed up in the Santa suit and we taught them about a few of our Christmas traditions. Everyone got to open presents, and it was really fun. Sammy and Joshy had used all of their birthday money to buy presents for Tila and Hari, the boys who are just their ages. Sammy was SO excited for Tila and Hari to open their presents. It was a great experience for them.
You can see lots and lots of pictures in the Facebook album I just created by clicking here.
This Christmas was not without its challenges. The weather was a big one -- we got stuck in the snow trying to leave my parents' house Christmas Eve, and then in the same place Christmas morning. The roads were just awful and we hadn't noticed how bare my tires are. We made it to the end of my parents' street and got totally stuck, but luckily my dad and sister drove by just then on the way to pick up my other sister. They got us unstuck momentarily, but then we slid deeper in. Luckily (again!) my brother's best friend happened by in an SUV with a tow rope and towed us into my parents' driveway. Yay for small towns where everyone who drives by is someone you know! :) We had chains in the back of the van, so we made it home safely in the evening. I have to say, though, it never entered my mind for a moment to stay home -- I love Christmas with my family WAY too much!
Poor Dan is also so sick -- he has nasty bronchitis that has just been getting worse and worse, but he was a real trooper. Eliza's also really congested and fussy (for her, anyway, but really not too much), but she had lots of people to love her and take care of her yesterday.
But despite these challenges, this Christmas made me so grateful for my family, and for all our blessings. We always have enough and to spare, even when we're struggling -- warm homes and clothes, food to eat, and so much more. We are blessed to live in a land of peace and security. We have the gospel, and the promise of being together forever. I really missed Carissa this Christmas -- she loved everything about the season -- but I know we will be with her again. What greater blessing could you ask for?
Well, I'm a few days late with this entry, but life has -- as always -- been a little crazy. On Monday our sweet baby Eliza was two months old! I can hardly believe that she's so big, but I can also hardly believe there was a time we didn't have her! She is such a sweet little thing. She has the cutest little smile that we see more and more. She's sleeping through the night and is usually just as happy as can be. She's been cranky the past few days, but I'm sure she'll get over that pretty quick. Her big brothers both just adore her. Sammy especially hates to see her unhappy ever. Today he asked "But Mommy, why is baby Eliza fussing?" "Honey, all babies cry sometimes -- she's just fine." "I wish she was born the same age as me; then she'd never cry!" He said this with such sincere concern. It was very sweet.
Here's our little sweetie on her two-month birthday!
I went down to Cedar City on Monday with Joshy and Eliza, my parents, Ange, and Grandpa and Grandma Tarbet for our dear friend Barbara Adams' funeral. She is my aunt Glynis' mother and such a wonderful lady. I was really glad we could go down and support all their family. And it was fun to hang out with everyone who went down -- being cooped up together in the car all day leads to lots of fun conversations. Joshy and Eliza were amazingly good. Eliza slept pretty much all the time we were in the car, and Joshy was pretty happy watching movies on our portable dvd player. How did anyone haul kids on long trips without those things?! :) Joshy felt pretty special getting to be with Nana and Bapa and Grandpa and Grandma and Ange all day. Bapa had him laughing so hard while we were at lunch -- Joshy kept lifting up his shirt to be tickled again and again!
Sammy's first day of preschool with his new teacher was Monday, and he didn't want to miss it, so he got to have his first-ever friend sleepover! His good little buddy Boyd is in his class, and his mom -- my wonderful friend Katie -- graciously invited Sammy to sleep over and spend the day at their house. Sammy was SO excited. He talked all weekend about all the fun things he was going to do with Boyd, and Sunday evening he couldn't wait to leave Nana and Bapa's house to get to Boyd's. As soon as we turned onto Boyd's street, however, he started to freak out: "I'll miss you guys too much, I'm too scared, I don't think it will be like home..." and so on. I pulled into Boyd's driveway and got out to talk to Sammy. I told him I understood he was scared, but I thought if he just went inside he'd remember how excited he was and how much fun he'd have. But Sammy was not interested, and the more I tried to persuade him the more he resisted. So I said, "It's okay, honey -- I know it's a little scary. We can try a sleepover another time -- I'll just run up to the door and tell Boyd's mom you're not coming." But that made him even more upset, because he didn't want to hurt Boyd's feelings! He's such a tender little heart. So we went back and forth like this for several minutes, and a couple times he even got out of the car, but as soon as I started to close his door he jumped back in and clung to his carseat like a life preserver. I'm not gonna lie to ya -- I was getting a little frustrated. Finally I just grabbed Eliza (Joshy was at home with Dan) and walked up to the front door without him. He hid by the garage. As soon as I knocked on the door, Boyd came bursting out, so excited to see Sammy. Katie and I finally talked Sammy into coming inside, just to see Boyd's room. The turning point was when I told him Eliza reeeeally wanted to see Boyd's room, and could we please go in just for a second? Sammy cautiously crept into the house, looking like he was sure a monster was going to jump out from every corner. Within about two minutes he announced: "I decided I'm going to stay, Mom, you can go now," and he never had another moment's trouble. Katie said he was cracking them up at dinner the next night, when he told them he'd been a little "skittish" about coming to their house...
Oh, and just another funny little note: Last night as we were going to bed and Sammy was dawdling downstairs, I called down "Sammy, get your buns up here!" To which Joshy, in a voice of great patience, replied, "Mommy, Sammy only has one bum..."
Anyhoo, I'd better get a move on -- I've got Halloween costumes to work on, treats to make, and decorations for Glynis' baby shower to finish up, not to mention a sink full of dishes. Never a dull moment!
We had such a wonderful day yesterday for Eliza's baby blessing. So many of our family and loved ones were able to join us, and it was just beautiful. Eliza really is a special little spirit, and I feel so blessed that we have her in our family.
Grandma Olive and Grandma Hill made the most beautiful blessing dress for Eliza. All the details were absolutely amazing. I am so grateful for all the love they put into it. Grandma Olive embroidered the names of all the women who helped with the dress into the slip of the dress, along with Eliza's name. They even let me sew on the buttons so I could be included, which I thought was very sweet. Sewing on buttons is just about my speed - even then I was kind of freaked out that I would do something to mess up the dress. She also had lovely, perfect little hand-made booties from Nana, a sweet little bracelet from Aunt Gae, and a big white flower headband from me. She is certainly a very much loved little girl! None of these photos do the beautiful dress and booties any justice, so I'm going to get the dress all washed and ironed again and get some really good pictures taken.
I'll also have more pictures to post after I get the pics my brother Eric took. He is a great photographer and was kind enough to take pictures of Eliza, our family, and Eliza and Amelia together! I can't wait to see those ones, especially! Amelia and Eliza are adorable together. Their hair might not be the same color, but the style is exactly the same! It's really quite entertaining!
The day was a little complicated by Dan and me being really sick. Poor Dan nearly passed out first thing in the morning while giving Richard (our soon-to-be brother-in-law) a blessing (there was a lot of ookiness going around), and I was really worried he wouldn't make it through Eliza's. But he had a beautiful blessing from his dad before we headed to church, and he was able to do a great job. I just have a yucky cold, which wouldn't be that big a deal, but there's not much I can take for it while breastfeeding. I was so congested I couldn't think straight. But seriously, I was feeling so happy and thankful for our wonderful family that I was a happy camper. I'm not gonna lie to ya, though -- I was very happy to drop into bed once we got home...
Please join us as we celebrate the birth of our sweet baby Elizabeth Carissa Hill!
We are going to be blessing baby Eliza on Sunday, October 12th, and we'd love it if y'all could join us! Our sacrament meeting starts at 11 a.m. and is insanely crowded, so you'll want to come early if you don't want to sit in the hall. We would also love to have Eliza's uncles, great-uncles, grandpas, and great-grandpas standing in the circle. After the block we'll be headed over to my parents' house for a family potluck party, so that will start somewhere around 2:30-3-ish. We'd love to have you at both or one or the other! Let me know if you have any questions!
Directions to the church: Exit I-15 at Lehi Main St., go west to Redwood Rd. (SR 68) Go north on SR 68 for about 1 mile, then turn left into Harvest Hills Go straight through two roundabouts and you're there! The church is right off the second roundabout at the top of the hill.
Eliza is now 9 days old! She is just such a sweet little thing -- hardly ever fussy, sleeps pretty well at night, and provides entertainment for minutes on end for her big brothers. :) Sammy is especially smitten with her. He wants to check on her every few minutes, just to make sure she's doing okay, and he wants to hold her all the time. Joshy is a little more conflicted. He likes to give her kisses, but he also likes to pull her hair and pinch her arms. Yesterday he yelled "You get back in Mommy's tummy RIGHT NOW!" at her. Ah, well -- guess we'll keep giving him extra loves so he knows we still love him, too!
Sammy started preschool this week, to his everlasting excitement. Boyd, one of his best friends, and a couple other friends from the ward are in his class, AND he got to take Buster (his stuffed bunny) for show and tell. Does it get any better than that? He also got his very own backpack. He's getting so big! Joshy was very excited when we got to go pick him up -- it's hard to be left behind all the time! We walked home with Boyd and his mom and little sister, and Joshy followed the big boys so determinedly (is that a word?), always one step behind but just happy as a clam.
My mom has been here this week taking care of all of us and has been such a huge help and great company. Ange also came over to help while Mom was working at the temple yesterday. The boys had lots of fun staying over at Nana and Bapa's for nearly a week after Eliza was born (because Joshy and everyone at their house had a nasty stomach bug we didn't want to give to Eliza) -- one of their favorite things was Bapa making up stories for them every night at bedtime. We just have the greatest family ever!
Elizabeth Carissa was born yesterday at 12:29 pm, and she's just beautiful! She's 7 lbs., 10 oz., and 19 1/2", with a full head of dark hair and big blue eyes. The labor and delivery couldn't have gone better -- I only had to push through one contraction and she popped right out!
I feel great! I've been able to get some good rest, and I haven't had too much pain at all. Eliza is doing wonderful -- she just got a clean bill of health from the pediatrician and she's been nursing like a pro. She's a strong one, too; she's already holding her head up and trying to look around! Thank you so much to everyone who has sent us their good thoughts and prayers. We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful experience!
Amy brought the boys to meet Eliza soon after she was born, and they were both so excited! They got to watch through the window of the nursery while she got cleaned up and checked out, and the they had so much fun holding her and giving her kisses. They are both proud big brothers! Joshy has been having a hard time with us being gone, but he is just totally enamored with his new baby. We just need to help him learn to be a little more gentle -- he is VERY enthusiastic in his loves! Sammy is just the sweetest, tenderest big brother you could imagine, and I'm very proud of him.
Dan and I came home with baby Eliza at about 7 this evening and we've just been relaxing. Eliza's been super sleepy today, so hopefully she'll still sleep tonight! As soon as I get this posted I am going to bed myself! Here are the pictures from our camera, but there are a ton more really cute ones that my dad took in this Facebook album:
